Mercer/Valley
Transportation Analysis
In response to both recent and projected
growth in the South Lake Union neighborhood, as well as current
proposals being developed for the Alaskan Way Viaduct Project, the
Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is conducting the Mercer
Corridor Study to identify potential safety and mobility improvements
that would benefit the area. A conceptual design for Mercer Street
will be presented at an open house on Tuesday, November 12, 2002
between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the South Lake Union Naval Reserve (860
Terry Avenue North). At the Open House City staff and consultants will
present a conceptual plan for the Mercer Corridor and a summary of the
benefits and tradeoffs to this concept. One of the key components of
the plan is to widen Mercer Street and create a two-way street.
Overall goals of the study include identifying ways to improve
approaches to and connections between Interstate 5 and SR-99,
enhancing access to many regional economic, cultural, and recreation
activity centers and facilities, and supporting a comprehensive set of
improvements for the South Lake Union area (including reconnecting the
east/west street grid and providing enhanced transit service and
bicycle and pedestrian facilities). Results of the Mercer Corridor
Study will be further developed and incorporated into a transportation
study for South Lake Union in 2003.
